Picture Quitting was launched by the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) in association with the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) and with support from the Motion Picture Industry Pension & Health Plans (MPIPHP) as the first industry-led smoking cessation program ever offered in the United States that combines free counseling with low cost medication.

Picture Quitting Staff

Mitchell Nides
, PhD

Mitchell Nides is the Director and co-developer of Picture Quitting, and has been helping smokers quit for the past 25 years. From 1987 to 1999 Dr. Nides was a smoking cessation researcher and counselor in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Dept. of the UCLA School of Medicine. In 1993 he founded Los Angeles Clinical Trials where he has been the Principal Investigator of dozens of clinical trials testing the safety and efficacy of smoking cessation medications including nicotine gum, patch, inhaler, and nasal spray, and non-nicotine medications Zyban and Chantix.

Over the years, Dr. Nides has trained thousands of physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and other health care professionals on ways to help their patients stop smoking. He has co-hosted, along with former US Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, a live smoking cessation satellite broadcast to smokers across the country. Dr. Nides has authored numerous articles on smoking cessation in such journals as Archives of Internal Medicine, JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, Addiction, Nicotine & Tobacco Research, and American Journal of Health Behavior.

Dr. Nides was a two-pack-a-day smoker who quit for good at the tender age of 23. It is one of his proudest accomplishments.

Tina Nides, BA
Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist
Tina Nides is the co-developer of Picture Quitting and has helped thousands of people quit smoking since she entered the field in 1997 working as a Quit Smoking Specialist at Los Angeles Clinical Trials. Previously, Tina spent over 24 years in the entertainment industry as a studio executive, literary agent and film producer. She got her B.A. in English Literature from UCLA. She sings and plays the guitar, and is an avid reader.

A 2 1/2 pack-a-day smoker, she quit many years ago with the help of a formal quit smoking program. It changed her life.

Barbara Ballinger, MFT
Tobacco Treatment Specialist
Barbara Ballinger has been with Picture Quitting since 2004, as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and has been working in the field of addictions for over twenty years. She graduated from CSULA with a Masters in Psychology. In her spare time she enjoys being active outdoors and loves spending time with her family and her menagerie of animals at home. She has been smoke-free since her early 20's.

Terri England, BS
Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist

Terri England started with Picture Quitting in 2004, as a Program Coordinator and is now a Tobacco Treatment Specialist. She grew up in Maryland and graduated from Towson University with a B.S. in Mass Communication. She received training from leading cessation specialists including Mayo Clinic and is a certified smoking cessation group facilitator. She is also a writer and has worked in television production. She is an avid music fan and enjoys traveling. Terri quit smoking at age 30 and is proud to be a non-smoker.

Stephanie Segal, BA
Program Coordinator
Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist

Stephanie Segal graduated from UCLA, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Advocacy. She was born and raised in New York City, and is from a family of musicians. She graduated from the High School of Music and Art and has worked as an actress and singer, as well as in film production. Prior to joining Picture Quitting as its Program Coordinator/Tobacco Treatment Specialist, Stephanie was the Program Coordinator for the USC Law School Domestic Violence Clinic. Stephanie quit smoking when she was twenty-three. She spends every possible spare moment on the flying trapeze.
